LGBTQ+/Gender identity
As a community, LGBTQ+ people face higher rates of poverty, stigma, and marginalization, which puts us at greater risk for sexual assault. Sexual violence is used as a form of power, oppression, and control to maintain gender and sexuality hierarchies of privilege. For LGBTQ+ survivors of assault, the discrimination we face surrounding those identities creates barriers for seeking and receiving help from law enforcement, medical services, shelters, or rape crisis centers - the very resources that are supposed to help us. This epidemic of sexual violence in the LGBTQ+ community is something we must all work together to address.

SAAN's LGBTQ+/Gender Identity leadership helps our community to address the epidemic of sexual violence in the LGBTQ+ community and encourage the leadership of queer and trans people in both SAAN and the sexual violence prevention community.
